The Southern Mix is proud to introduce our latest interview with a DIVA sensation, Mahoganee. Coming from the South, Mahoganee is proving that the South is packed full of Rhythm & Soul entertainers. She is also showing us that she is definitely doing what God has intended her to do; make music. Check out this recent Interview that the talented DIVA did with The Southern Mix.
The Southern Mix: Let's talk about you first of all. Briefly describe to our members of the Southern Mix who is Mahoganee?
Mahoganee: Mahoganee is a little girl who grew up in the South in a very small town that didn’t realize how truly sheltered she was until she moved away and saw how differently other people lived. Now that I am a grown woman I realize that to not use the power of your voice is like having no voice at all. So I write for those little girls that haven’t realized the power of their voice.
The Southern Mix: What has been the highpoint to your career professionally so far?
Mahoganee: My Life right now is the high point because I am soooo excited about this new album. “Thoughtz of A D.I.V.A. There are so many emotions that come with it. I really took my writing skills to another level on this and the music wow, my husband, Cheefah Dray of Bhp (Beat Huztlerz Productionz, Inc. who is my producer took the music to another level as well.
The Southern Mix: Do you think R&B is at the top of the list for most popular genre of music?
Mahoganee: No, I think that music right now is such a mixture; it’s like a big pot of gumbo.
The Southern Mix: What do you think you bring new to the R&B/Hip-Hop music industry that has not been done before?
Mahoganee: Well first off, I sing Soul Music; I don’t limit myself to any particular genre. My album is very eclectic. When you listen to the album, you will definitely hear originality in my voice and in my writing.
The Southern Mix: If you had an opportunity to perform one remake of a classic R&B single, which one would it be and why?
Mahoganee: Well, I have several songs that come to mind so I can’t pick just one.
The Southern Mix: For new fans that are not familiar with you, what can they expect from one of your live performances?
Mahoganee: They can expect a sassy Chocolate D.I.V.A. who will pour out her soul on stage on top of some red hot music. They can expect Energy, Laughter, Tears and thought provoking lyrics.
The Southern Mix: With your new material, can fans expect you to be taking any risks with any new sounds or will you stick to the style you're known for?
Mahoganee: I am definitely taking risks with this album lyrically and musically. My topics are very edgy and my style is just simply me doing a little bit of everything. I don’t want to be boxxed in.
The Southern Mix: You have a very soulful voice, what has been your inspiration for wanting to do R&B music?
Mahoganee: My Inspiration is to just do good music whether it’s R & B, Soul, Rokk & Roll. My Inspiration comes from everything around me, people, places, current affairs. When God blesses you with a talent and you don’t use it, you lose it. So I am always thankful that God gave me this talent.
The Southern Mix: Do you feel that you were meant to make music (If so, why?)?
Mahoganee: I know that I was born to make music, both my parents sang, I have a brother (Darrell Mivens) in ATL that is self-taught in playing several instruments and he produces, writes, and sings. He also has 2 daughters that sing and play instruments as well. I have three nephews that are music producers Robert Mivens (RoBlak of FTGU Entertainment (From the Ground Up, Entertainment) and Marcus Stewart out of Savannah, Ga. and Derrick Mivens out of St. Mary’s, Georgia. I have 2 more nephews that are singers, my younger sister (Dewana Johnson) is a hip-hop dancer that lives in ATL and I also had a sister that sang and I am married to a phenomenal music producer, so I would say that I was definitely destined to make music.
The Southern Mix: Of the material you've completed so far, what are some of your favorite songs?
Mahoganee: On the new album, there are several songs that are favorites, so I am sort of switching back & forth right now. I reaaaaaallly love the song “The Reazonz Y, Pt 1. “I Don’t think U really Know” is also a favorite & Rokk & Roll.
